Lighthouse
Lighthouses don't run all over an island looking for boats to save; they just stand there shining.

What it is to be Human
"You can't buy life." He said. That tiny sentence touched me. We spend our lives working, sleeping, eating, loving, etc... I just watched a program Called Human by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. He spent three years travelling the world collecting personal stories from over 2000 people and compiled a 3-part documentary on being human. Each of us has a battle. Most of the time we think that we are in it alone, but we are not. It is beautifully done and for me it was emotional to watch. I cried as I listened to the stories of poverty, hardship, wanting love, and never knowing it. I thought about my struggles and realize that mine pale in comparison to those that told their story. Part 2 & 3 are on Youtube.
"Life is like carrying a message from the child you were
to the old man that you will be."

Getting back up is living...
"There comes a time in your life, when you walk away from all the drama and people who create it. You surround yourself with people who make you laugh. Forget the bad, and focus on the good. Love the people who treat you right, pray for the ones who don't. Life is too short to be anything but happy. Falling down is a part of life, getting back up is living."

Interiority Complex = Queendom
Up until the age of five we are authentically ourselves and then when we become wrinkled the same thing happens again. But it is the in between stage that messes us up. We worry so much about what other people think of us that we lose sight of our uniqueness. Self perception plays a major role too. This is where the comparison game comes in. We look at ourselves and see lack, then look at others and think that we should be them instead of ourselves. If only I were like so and so then I would be happy...
I used to think that I was shy, and I was at one point. Then I thought that I wasn't talkative, again, that is how I saw myself. The list goes on and on. We tell ourselves lies and then believe them. At this point in my life I am well on my way to being authentically me. And this makes me very happy. The video below is very encouraging because we need to grow up with a greater sense of self.

Enjoying Now
The gardens are now a withering version of what they were a couple of months ago. Yesterday, I was chatting with a stranger about being present. We always tend to project our thoughts to the future or in the past. But we are never here, never now.
As we were exiting the elevator to start our work day the woman said, "Maybe there isn't that much to be happy about right now to keep our minds in the present."
Then she said, "This is such a philosophical subject for such an early hour." I laughed. We wished each other good day. The thing is, what she said is true. When we eat a delicious meal it is gobbled instead of savored with our palate. Instead of enjoying each morsel that is placed into our mouth.
We miss details in the busyiness of life. Like a colorful flower, beautiful beads on a dress, an intended smile. Things that are here, now, present seem to not be worth savoring, which they should, because they are our future memories. I want to practice being here in the moment and live like it was my last day on earth having permission to do nothing if I want to.

A Tale about a Lady and Three Little Girls
As
I was making my way home from my walk last night, three little girls
started talking to me. I wanted to try out my new camera lens by taking some pictures of a vine growing on the side of a house in my neighborhood . I stopped to take a picture of some flowers in front of their house. A little girl with very short hair was playing outside in a well worn party
dress and bare feet.
When she saw me she ran over to show me a blue
glass stone that she found.
Immediately, I noticed her torn dress and short hair. I assumed that
she was sick. My heart went out to her.
The three girls showed me the
beautiful sea shells that they found. I talked to them a little bit and
then asked to take their pictures. I took a couple of shots and then
told them goodbye as I turned towards home.
The little girl with the
torn dress ran after me shouting, "Lady, she said, here this is for you for
taking our picture." I looked down and in her tiny hand was a crumpled
dollar bill. Tears came to my eyes. "No sweety, keep your money, I
just wanted to take your picture." I said, trying hard to compose
myself. I don't know their story, but I was touched with the little
girl's generosity.

Illusion of Intimacy
We need to think about the kind of connections we want to have with each other. We are lonely, but afraid of intimacy. Our little electronic and social media devices are so powerful that they not only change what we do but who we are. They bring the illusion of companionship without the demands of friendship. I think that we are setting ourselves up for trouble. We are getting used to a new way of being alone together, but, also, be elsewhere at the same time. We want to control where we focus our attention. People are hiding from each other even though they are constantly connected. Because of these devices our view of what we consider a relationship has changed. We have Facebook, Twitter, texting, email, and numerous other social media devices. People are texting at funerals (seriously?). Talking on the phone in the bathroom. Befriending strangers on Facebook. Yet, where is the intimacy? What has happened to the human touch?
In a recent study, there was an old woman pouring her heart out to a robotic seal (paro). It had white fur with big eyes and long eye lashes. The seal made comforting sounds when the woman bared her soul to the tiny robot. Somehow she was comforted by this robot. It made her feel understood, but the machine understood nothing. The old lady was surrounded by people who could have given her this kind of comfort, but opted not to. However, they cheered a connection between a human and a machine and they thought about all of the possibilities for those lonely people who have no one to share their innermost thoughts with. We expect more from technology than from each other. At end of her life, she deserves to have people around who knows her story and can learn from her. Can a device do that for anyone? What has become of her value?
A couple of years ago, when I was going through my divorce, my brother, his girlfriend, and many friends and relatives were at my side whenever I needed them. My brother came over every day and would cry along with me. Those times were and are priceless. I literally would not have made it through such a dark and lonely time without all of them telling me that I can make it. It is shameful to imagine a little old lady or man with no one to share their heart and soul with. For that matter anyone can be lonely and in need of companionship. Were we not made to be in pairs?

There are many things that I can control...
"There
is so much about my fate that I cannot control, but other things do
fall under the jurisdiction. I can decide how I spend my time, whom I
interact with, ..... I can select what I can read and eat and study. I
can choose how I'm going to regard unfortunate circumstances in my
life-whether I will see them as curses or opportunities. I can choose my
words and the tone of voice in which I speak to others. And most of
all, I can choose my thoughts.”

This is your life...
I cannot really add to this other than we let other's take control when we shouldn't. Embrace your life fully because it is so very short. The closer that you get to the end of it you will realise how short it really is.

Shelley Galbreath: Small Devotional Tackling Big Issues
Shelley Galbreath is an inspiration to me. A petite woman with a big heart. We reach for God in many ways. Shelley does her reaching through her writing. When I first met her, I was awed that someone with such a gift ended up working with me in an office full of constantly ringing phones. I am so glad that she did. She wrote a book called, Discouraged Mom's Devotions to Go. It is a small pocket sized book of encouragement. Haphazardly, I opened the book and the first page I see is about forgiveness. Oh this book is talking to me already. As I read through her book, I realize that there are so many areas in my life that really needs work, especially forgiveness, which seems to be the hardest. We never fully acheive the "godliness" in life that we would like, at least I haven't. However, we should never give up trying. This book is small enough to keep in your purse or car to pull out whenever you need to read something uplifting and only have a few minutes. I keep mine beside my bed.
Shelley is currently working on her first novel.

Desiderata: Strive to be Happy
Desiderata:
As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth guietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Espeically, do not feign affection. Neither be critical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all it shams, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful.
Strive to be happy.

Wonderful Things are Happening for me Finally
Exciting things have been happening for me. My house is in the process of getting painted. I had hired a man back in March to do the job. Have you ever looked at someone and knew by the looks of them that they wouldn't do what they promised? He would come and work for a couple of hours and then go home. Then he didn't show up for two weeks without a word and kept asking me for money. I had to let him go because I knew in my heart that I would be throwing my money away with this man. He came to my door asking for work. He just didn't do a good job. When my brother was over helping me with the roof on the garage, he told the man to take his things and leave. It was okay that he was the bad guy and not me. I hate hurting someone's feelings. Once my brother saw the state of the house he stood up for me like all men should do for the women they love.
| my front door |
Another man came to my door the year before asking for work. I asked him to take the paint off of my front door. When he was done he told me that the way it turned out was the best that he can do. He should be ashamed of himself. Today, it is still a mess. I can hardly wait until they start painting. The house will be green with white trim.

Goodbye Morris...
Morris, my precious "little feller" passed away yesterday. I took him into my home and heart last March. This past week he became very ill and stopped eating. Yesterday, I took him to the emergency pet hospital to learn that he had a rare form of FIV (feline autoimmune virus) or AIDS for cats. I tried to think of every way possible to save my little companion but there was no hope. To prolong his life would prolong his suffering. I just couldn't do that to him. Morris came at a time when I needed him the most. We literally saved each other, he needed food and shelter and I needed love and companionship. I will miss him very much.

The Human Experience: You're Included
Four friends, each with their own story to tell. Two come from a home where their father was abusive in many ways. Another, lost his mother when he was only nine. All looking for love. Each life is a treasure. When we have love and support of family and friends we are more likely to live a life more fully. But what about those who don't? We live in a society that is "thing" oriented instead of the greatest gift of FAMILY. Nothing can replace the love of your family, especially the love of a father or mother as the young men in the filmed experienced. Four young men go on a journey. They are in search of the human experience. Even though bad things may happen in our lives, life is still good. We have that drive to get up every day in spite of things. They start off living on the streets of New York, City. It was the coldest part of the winter. Brother's Clifford and Jeffrey slept in cardboard boxes along side many of the homeless people of the city. A woman they met while on this journey shared a story about her experience when she was first homeless. Four dogs were living on the streets the same as she was. People saw the dogs and felt compassion for them but there she stood, no one noticing her need. A tear trickled down her cheek as she again felt the emotions of that experience. Each of us asks, Does my life matter? What is my purpose? Is my life unique? People become depressed when they no longer see their life as significant.
The four young men also went to see the lost children of Peru and a leper colony in Ghana. As I watched this documentary, I again felt the feelings that I had when my husband left. I felt as though my life had no purpose. Who am I going to take care of, I asked myself? Healing comes with time and willingness to forgive. When Jeffrey and Clifford met up with their father after his 10 year absence, Jeffrey spoke of forgiveness before it was asked for. The key to living a successful life is through forgiveness, which enables us to move on. This is a very moving documentary and I would suggest anyone to watch it. It will touch your heart.

Spring, Glorious Spring
I love this time of year. Everything literally comes alive. I went to the park on Sunday and it was packed full of people wanting to look at the flowers and enjoy the sunshine. I, too, had to join in. I packed my camera and off I went.
Where is was once bare, has now come to life.
I saw a sea of tulips
A blooming tree with bright pink flowers
There was a garden of tulips, getting ready to open up.
Flowers coming out everywhere.
This is my view of spring.
